This Gesture Brings

This shifting brings a great noise
This lifting of the head brings a broad shaft of light
This pause between breaths brings a water-bead
This shuffling of feathers brings with it a mess
This stooping back brings a crooked memory
This crumpled finger brings an ancient hope
This quiet burrowing brings a great noise

It Finally Happened

I was rushed to emergency in the back of an ambulance - we roared through Times Square and each pothole we hit only helped lull me into a quiet spell. That nice man was holding my hand and, faintly, I heard him whisper to the driver "...but there's so much blood." I smiled and tried to let the sounds of the police escort guide me someplace warmer. At long last, I thought, my tax dollars at work. Just for me.
